RECycle Bike Donation Drive (Racine, WI)

AmeriCorps*VISTAs Erin Morey and Caitlin Delap are currently developing an Earn-A-Bike program through the REC, in conjuction with Racine Unified School District's Lighted Schoolhouse Afterschool Program and the Working Bikes Cooperative.

The Earn-A-Bike program will be geared to youth ages 10-14 allowing them a chance to build a bike from scratch, and receive a helmet and bike lock!

Participants will brake for a bicycle maintenance/repair and safety course, pedal through a book assignment (coordinated with the Racine Public Library) and shift into a community service project.

In preparation for this program, the REC is hosting the RECycle Bike Donation Drive to gather enough material for the Earn-A-Bike program.

Current plans are to hire several high-school students trained in bicycle maintenance/safety/repair to lead the after-school courses at the host schools (TBD).

THE REC NEEDS YOUR UNUSED BIKES and BIKE PARTS - PUSH, PULL, CARRY OR DRAG! SEPTEMBER 27 & 28

There are several anticipated outcomes for the Earn-A-Bike program: encourage safe bicycle use, teach bicycle repair/maintenance, provide high-school youth with valuable skill sets while teaching basic engineering concepts, and instill a sense of project completion and the accompanying pride in participating youth. This program is still in development, and any assistance or advice you can provide is more than appreciated.
